Hooftstraat1906 The Hooftstraat around 1906, seen from the west. The natives came ooking when the photographer appeared. In the back you can just see the tip of the R.C. church tower. On the left in the open door: R. Lammerts. The three girls closest to the front are the sisters Sjaan, Rieke and Cath. Halsema. The man with the hat is secretary (of the Bank) Roelfs. (Note: These three girls are my wife Catherine's aunts: --John Ketelaars.

Kwelterland: The Kwelterlands of Hoornhuizen (Kwelterlands are the lands recently won from the sea: You build a small dikes and dig small canals. The sea spills water over the dikes, bringing silt, sand and clay, and the water disappears again through the canals. Older kwelterlands are several feet above sealevel)

Molenrijharbour: The harbour of Molenrij, when transport was mainly by ship. (Molenrij, Kleine Huisjes, Kruisweg and Hornhuizen formed part of the municipality of Kloosterburen)

[IMAGE] School: The RC school, build in 1875. The photo was taken around 1900. Currently the "Intergemeetelijke Sociale Dienst" (Intermunicipal Social Service) and the public library are housed here.
[IMAGE] Vender: Vender Bolt from Kloosterburen with his wooden venderwagen, from which he sells, among other things, hats and caps. In front of the cart stands a gray horse (schimmel). Mr. Bolt is the one who stands on the right. Picture taken about 1920.
